Re-purposing

I found out my mom was donating her wedding dress to D.I. and just about lost it. Of course I want it and asked if I could have it. It's so classic and simple and just plain beautiful - just like my mom.

This is the situation though. I thought it would be a great idea if I re-purposed the dress and designed and made a dress that both of my daughters can wear on their baptism day. My husband thinks otherwise. He thinks I should just save it as is and keep it as an heirloom.

I'm now torn. What do you think I should do?

WOW!! I'm with Ryan..don't cut it up...not just yet! I'm thinking it will serve a purpose sooner than later and for now I love this picture I'd change the hanger;) but the door is a perfect back drop. The dress truly is your mom,, classic beauty!

I would use is as a baptism dress! My dress is just sitting in my closet, never to be used again. And same with my mom's wedding dress. She has only pulled it out once since she got married and it was because I wanted to see it before I got married. So take some pics of it and then use it!
I saw the cutest blessing dress that someone had made from their wedding dress. It was adorable.

I wore my grandma's dress for our wedding and loved it. It had to be altered quite a bit for it to work though. Does it have a train? What about cutting off the train part or perhaps the bottom edging just to make handkerchiefs that they can then use for baptism, temple etc. Then if no-one wants to use it for their own wedding, I think a future grand-daughter has an amazing blessing dress in her future - perhaps 2 of them?

I don’t envy you. That is a tough decision to make. It is very beautiful and classic. Maybe your girls will wear it in a future photo shoot or something...good luck.

oh man! can we do a shoot with it first before you piece it?! Cause it is beautiful!! I can see both sides... wanting some special for the baptism dresses, but there is just something so amazing about this dress that makes me hesitate to say yes for sure too... good luck! I am sure whatever you decide you will know it was the right decision for you and your family!

I'm with you on this one. I've spent many hours this past year sorting through "heirlooms". Keeping stuff and not using it turns it into trash, in my opinion. Make something of it. It's like children - each of them has a little of your mother in them, without having to be exactly her.

Don't suppose you would rent it out? I was thinking of using an old wedding dress for an upcoming shoot. But haven't found one. That is a tough one. I would be unsure as well.

I"m going to have to vote with your hubs and say save it as an heirloom. It's a BEAUTIFUL dress and will mean the world to your little girls when they are older.

It is a beautiful dress! But it was going to DI anyway, right? And how long can material stand up to time anyway? I love the idea of making a baptism dress for the girls. You can take beautiful photos of the dress, which will last a lot longer than the actual dress, and the baptism dress will also be an heirloom, and a special part of their baptism days. But that is a hard decision. I wouldn't do it until I was sure of my decision. Good luck!

100% make it a baptism dress! That would be so beautiful and have such meaning! Do a photo shoot first though! :)

My friend made blessing and baptism dresses out of her own wedding dress. It was an early 90's with puff sleeves, but something got on it somewhere and wouldn't come out, so she made the dresses. They are wonderful and beautiful, and I think if you take lots of great pictures, even put the girls in the dress (while standing on a chair), to take pictures, then make the baptism dresses. You could also save some fabric and make an heirloom blessing gown for your future grand-daughters.
